Work on a major new employment area will begin with roads and trails being built

In June 2021, developers Harworth Group plc secured planning approval for the development of up to 1.1 sq m/ft of logistics and manufacturing space at its site in Wingates, Westhoughton.

They say the development has the potential to create up to 1,500 new jobs.

The site at Wingates is close to junction 6 of the M61 and the existing site of Harworths Logistics North, the largest direct retail development in the North West.

Developers last week submitted detailed plans for the “first phase” of the plans to the council.

Harworth plans to create a new access road, a roundabout, drainage and utility infrastructure ahead of the development of the industrial and warehouse space.

The first phase plans do not include any part of the site which will form a parcel for the development of employment facilities such as buildings, yards and car parks.

A letter of intent with the plans stated: The proposed roads provide connectivity to the approved site access road to the north of the site and a roundabout intersection on the west, east and south limbs serving lots 1, 2, 5, and 4 and 7 respectively.

The plans also include plans for public footpaths through the area.

In the north-east of the site the proposed footpath provides a link to Chorley Road whilst in the south-east of the site the footpath changes to provide a new link to the Wingates Industrial Estate and the existing network of public footpaths to the west of Carlies Farm.

A short section of the road is also proposed to leave the proposed infrastructure for a road to the employment development, which will be widened as further phases of the development come forward.

Harworth said it is intended that each of these trails become a public right-of-way after development is complete.

Harworth told the planning inspectorate that the development when complete would benefit the local economy by up to £126m a year.

Speaking after the approval of the scheme, Lynda Shillaw, chief executive of Harworth, said: Securing planning for our Wingates development marks an important milestone for us and will have a substantial positive effect on the local economy in terms of construction. , permanent jobs and investments. .

It will allow Bolton’s businesses to expand, while at the same time improving motorway infrastructure and protecting local biodiversity and green spaces.

Harworth has a proven track record of delivering large scale employment spaces, for example at our nearby Logistics North site, and we look forward to repeating this success.

Council planners will decide on plans for the first phase of the project in the coming weeks.
